NORTH READING, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's safe to say Austin Prep junior Jack Burnham of Melrose made a good impression during tryouts for the varsity golf team.
On the 14th hole at the Hillview Golf Course in North Reading on Monday, Jack used a 5-iron on the par 3 to hit the shot of a lifetime... a hole-in-one. "I didn't know it went in," Jack said.
He said he heard his friends up ahead making noise, but assumed they were messing with him. "I thought my friends were kidding. Then I kind of walked up and it was just in the hole."
Word of Jack's miraculous shot traveled fast up and down the course.
Jack's teammate Luke was on the 17th hole when he said he started to hear about what happened. "I was just hearing rumors that someone made a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, and I had no idea who it was or what happened," he said.
Turned out, it was Jack who made the shot, and yes, Jack did make the team.
