AYER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A rally was held in Ayer Tuesday with lawmakers and hospital employees gathered to try and save Nashoba Valley Medical Center from closing down.
The hospital is a victim of Steward Health Care's bankruptcy filing along with Carney Hospital in Dorchester.
Steward said neither hospital received an auction bid so plans are underway to close both hospitals.
Six other Steward hospitals in Massachusetts are being sold.
Those gathered at Ayer Town Hall Tuesday morning said closing Nashoba Valley Medical Center will endanger lives.
Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squallia said something has to be done to keep the hospital open. "The state has to figure this out, and the federal government has to overhaul our healthcare system," she said.
A similar rally was held Monday to try and save Carney Hospital in Dorchester. Elected officials admit their options are limited in saving the hospitals from closure due to Steward being a private for-profit entity.
