BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was a beautiful sunny day Thursday for an outdoor party on the Boston Common.

The Friends of the Public Garden held a free carnival-themed backyard bash complete with music, lawn games, and carnival treats like cotton candy and slushies.

Liza Meyer is President of the Friends of the Public Garden.

She said the Common is a perfect spot for a party. "It offers so much value to the city," she said. "We want to bring people here to enjoy it."

Meyer said the Common and the Public Garden provide some of the only green spaces that people who live in the city can get to easily.

Some of the people showing up Thursday seemed pleasantly surprised there was this free carnival-like atmosphere right in Boston's backyard. "As a kid when I was younger, I've been here," said this local resident. "But this is my first time being here with my son, so it's fun getting the chance to see him have fun as well," he said.

Another resident gave the party a big thumbs up. "This is huge, huge! And it's really nice for the kids," he said.

Artist Nick Shea performed.

So did pop-up DJ 'A Trike Called Funk.'
