SALEM, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s a nightmare for a neighborhood in Salem, N.H. where a homeowner has been dumping piles of trash in his back yard.
For the past year, the trash has been nuisance for Michael Bates’ neighbors.
Piles of trash, hundreds of discarded boxes piled high — some topping six feet — are creating an eyesore on Maclarnon Road.
The trash piles are disintegrating which is causing another issue.
As part of a business venture, Bates bought printers, sold off the cartridges and other parts, then threw the leftover parts and boxes in his yard — hundreds of them.
He’s has now abandoned the home.
“The recycling market dropped. So it became a cost to get rid of the printers, rather than to recycling them for free,” Salem health officer Brian Lockart said. “Because of the cost, he didn’t clean up the property.”
The town of Salem filed a lawsuit against Bates and has given him until April 15 to clean it up or the town will have plans to do it for him.
