Bad Weather Good For Business At Melrose Yarn Shop

MELROSE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Monday was a rainy day in New England.

Perfect... for knitting.

While most people love sunny and warm days, Jennifer Goldenberg said those are the days that are actually bad for her business.

She owns Sit 'N Knit in Melrose, a yarn supply store. "When it's really a nice day in the middle of fall, no one comes in," Goldenberg said.

In fact, she said her sales go up as much as 50 percent when the warm weather turns colder, and then if it gets really lousy outside, people start scrambling for their knitting needles. "When it's dark and dreary out, no one is in a great space, right? So, when you come in and you look around my store, you see all these bright colors, a rainbow, and it just cheers people up."

She also said that her business is seasonal, and as the weather turns colder, people start thinking of Christmas gifts and maybe knitting a nice warm sweater for someone.

Conversely, Goldenberg said once the weather improves and gets warmer, her business drops off.

While crummy weather may be good for her business, that doesn't affect her personal preference. "I like the sun," she said.
