REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Recreational pot shops will not be opening up in Revere anytime soon.

The city council voted Monday to delay any measure to lift a ban on non-medical marijuana establishments.

An organized group of residents presented a petition with 2,000 signatures in support of the ban and to keep pot shops out of the city. "We don't want it. We don't want it in the community," said Jose Martinez, a resident who signed the petition. "That's enough. And I hope they never come back."

The group's main concern was centered around the safety of children.

There are residents who support the idea of allowing marijuana dispensaries to operate within city limits. "The economic benefit is pretty good, yea, for the city," said John, a Revere resident.

Despite several councilors speaking in favor of lifting the ban, the city council voted to keep the issue on file, which will keep the ban in place for now.
