BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Marathon has a new sponsor.

The Boston Athletic Association announced Monday that Bank of America will be the new presenting partner of the Boston Marathon starting next year, ending a nearly four-decade-long partnership with John Hancock. Both Bank of America and the BAA unveiled the new partnership at an event at the Bank of America Financial Center Monday afternoon.

BAA President and CEO Jack Fleming said he began searching for a new sponsor shortly after John Hancock told them they would not continue their sponsorship after this year's race.

"When we started our search Bank of America quickly became a front runner," Flemming said. "It's fantastic for the city to already be looking ahead at our new starting line."

The terms of the new deal between the BAA and Bank of America have not been disclosed. It is unclear why John Hancock did not decide to continue its sponsorship beyond the 2023 Boston Marathon. Miceal Chamberlain, the President of Bank of America Greater Boston, said he was excited to partner with the BAA and gave credit to the races' former sponsor.

"Hancock has done a phenomenal job," he said. "It feels like they've been part of this brand for so long but the baton is handing off to us and we're looking for the opportunity to enhance it even more if we can."

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also took time to thank John Hancock for its years of partnership during the announcement.

"This is truly something special," Mayor Wu said. "I want to thank John Hancock for many years of partnership and for contributing and being part of the city in this way. We are very grateful that you got us to this point."
