BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The “Pooch Primaries” are underway, as Boston’s Seaport gets closer to establishing a top dog.
Led by WS Development, Bark Your Vote gives people the chance to vote for the Seaport’s first-ever dog mayor. The title comes with a lot of perks, including discounts at local shops and restaurants, a dog mayor oil portrait and invitations to serve as a guest of honor at neighborhood events.
Rhubarb, a 2-year-old maltipoo, is the smallest of the five dogs in the race. Her owner Scarlet is having lots of running her campaign.
“We’ve just been saying, ‘Just Rhu it,'” said Scarlet. “She’s small, she’s got big dog energy, she’s got a great personality and it’s just perfect for Seaport.”
Also in the race is 9-month-old golden retriever Bennett, who’s loving all the extra attention.
“He has no clue [what’s going on], but he’s enjoying it,” said one of Bennett’s owners.
5-year-old doodle Aspen, the oldest dog in the race, is hoping to cash in on his connections.
“This friendly doodle makes it his mission to greet everyone he meets in Seaport,” said Aspen’s owner Alexandra.
Lady, an 18-month-old goldendoodle, was born and raised in Seaport.
“As a daily visitor to the Sea Green Dog Run, she’s got the local doggo scene covered and will make sure Seaport remains a happy, healthy, and social place for all pups,” said one of Lady’s owners.
Across the campaign trail,1-year-old golden retriever Macie is wagging her tail.
“She loves to carry her own leash in her mouth and ‘talk’ to people she meets,” said Macie’s owner Madilyn.
Voting continues through Oct. 30 and the winner will be announced on Nov. 1.
An “InDOGuration” at Sea Green Park is planned for March 29, 2025, which coincides with the unveiling of Barksworth Manor. A plaque with the dog mayor’s name will be displayed on the ceremonial doghouse.
