Bay Staters Are Embracing The Nostalgia With Pokémon Mania

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Bay Staters are still trying to catch them all!

Massive lines of people gathered at the GameStop in Chelsea and other retail locations across the country for a chance to cash in on the latest Pokémon card drop. Some fans, like Steven, waited in line for nearly 24 hours for the release. He and his friends ordered food and slept in a tent overnight to secure their spot. Steven said the key to this is camping out with friends and keeping a strong mental fortitude.

"Sometimes you will be tempted to leave. I don't really need it anymore; it's too cold, this is just too much. And sometimes you just gotta fight through those thoughts."

While some might think this is child's play, the moment is allowing adults to take a stroll down memory lane. Some older collectors have fallen back in love with their childhood hobby. James, who was at the Chelsea store, said camping out reminds him of the old days of midnight video game releases and is a great way to build community.

"It's definitely nostalgic, especially as a collector. It just brings back that same feeling you had as a little kid."

As collectors have resorted to doing things the old-fashioned way, they are also introducing their children to the hobby. Nick, another person at the store in Chelsea, said he's passed down his love of card collecting to his two kids.

"They open it up and then they're like, oh, how much is it worth? Oh, that's a cool card, stuff like that. So it's something we enjoy together. It's pretty cool."

But not everyone in the lines across the country has the purest of intentions. It's very common for resellers to buy as much as they can and then hike up the prices.

"Just don't feed the scalpers," Angel, who was also at the store, said.
