BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Bay Staters are preparing themselves for a frigid Thursday night and Friday as a polar vortex heads towards New England that will keep it chilly throughout the weekend.

Some Bostonians say they plan to put on multiple layers of clothing and turn up the heat when the cold front blasts the Commonwealth with wind and temperatures that feel like zero overnight into Friday morning.

"Oh, yeah, I'm gonna definitely have to bundle up. Like I'm freezing right now, but I just got off work so I'm hyper and you know, a little sweaty," one person said.

The arctic feel is expected to open the door to snow squalls, whipping wind gusts, and new record lows set to hit 20 to 30 degrees below the normal.

"We still need to go to work every day, so we have the only thing we could do is just getting used to it," another person said.

The City of Boston compiled a comprehensive set of safety tips to help residents prepare for the winter season:

  • Prepare for power outages. Stock up on batteries, flashlights and canned goods. Make sure you have a battery-operated radio, extra medicine, blankets and bottled water on hand.
  • Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing.
  • Remember to wear clothing like sweaters, boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. Wool clothing keeps your warmer than cotton when damp or wet.
  • Put mittens over your gloves.
  • Remember to check on your elderly family and neighbors.
