BELMONT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Protestors gathered outside Belmont Hill School on Saturday morning, voicing out against a new construction project.
The school is trying to put in a new parking lot to accommodate for game days, cutting down woodland areas with abundant wildlife. They are permitted to cut down two of the seven acres of woodland space.
Belmont Wild brought forward a concerned citizen case to the State Department of Environmental Protection. The department accepted the case, but Belmont Wild spokesperson Catherine Scott said they have begun cutting trees down.
“Every single unnecessary parking space [is] another tree down, it’s another car on the road to Belmont and it’s in excess of their current need,” said Scott.
Ellen Harris, who lives in the neighborhood where the parking lot is under construction, said she does not mind the extra street parking on game days.
“We really love having the dear, the coyotes, the fox, the little marmots,” said Harris. “We have hoot owls, which if you take down their tree, they can’t survive and so we’re really concerned about that.”
