WATERTOWN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With July being 'Disability Pride Month,' the Boston Public Library has been featuring programming that highlights the challenges faced by people who are disabled.

On Monday, the library hosted the screening of 'Best and Most Beautiful Things' by Cambridge director Garrett Zevgetis.

The documentary is about a graduate of the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown where Helen Keller attended.

Zevgetis said he was so inspired by Keller's story that he volunteered at the school.

While there, he met a student named Michelle Smith who is legally blind.

He ended up filming her experiences at the school. "The film is about a young person who goes to Perkins and has an incredible time there," he said. "After she graduates, something happens to her that's like falling off a cliff."

The film took seven years to make chronicling the challenges disabled people like Michelle face when trying to gain their independence despite their disability.
