BEVERLY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A multi service organization in Beverly has been giving back to its larger community for decades, and with a new piece of technology in their toolbox, food donations will be more accessible than ever.

Beverly Bootstraps has installed refrigerated food lockers outside their location that will be available 24 hours a day after their expected launch in January. WBZ's Carl Stevens spoke to Executive Director Sue Gabriel who had the breakdown of how the food lockers are going to work.

"We will be putting a specific food order into a locker for somebody that can order through our online portal and then they'll have some time, up to 48 hours, to pick it up. They get a little code, and they go and they just put that code or they use a QR code sent to them, that locker pops open and they can take their groceries and be on their way," Gabriel said.

The service is made possible by grants from the Greater Boston Food Bank and private donations.

"This is a technology that a year ago we probably wouldn't have even thought about using. They're refrigerated, that's really important, and they can withstand all the crazy New England weather. We could be in bed asleep, and somebody can be picking up their food and we know that food is safe," Gabriel said.

On top of food assistance, Beverly Bootstraps offers education, tax, and supply services.
