NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Shoebert the Seal is free to swim to his heart's delight. The young gray seal was released by the Mystic Aquarium on Block Island, after a full vet's checkup.

The seal first made headlines earlier this month when he took up residence in Beverly's Shoe Pond, drawing crowds of charmed onlookers. Beverly Police said Shoebert had to crawl through a culvert from the Bass River into the pond. Shoebert evaded capture once, but the seal eventually grew tired of the zoo charade and climbed out of the pond, waddling straight to the front of the Beverly Police Station last week.

The Mystic Aquarium said Shoebert was released near other seals.

It's not the first time Shoebert was taken in by the Mystic Aquarium — He was hospitalized at Mystic in 2018 and treated for a facial wound and an infection in his flipper. Shoebert was fitted with a satellite tracker so researchers can learn more about seal movements.
