LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The streets of Lynn will soon be a lot dimmer.
Many of the vintage neon art installations that light up the city are coming down, as the buildings that have hosted them for more than five years are being sold.
Lynn non-profit Beyond Walls installed the artwork in 2018 to provide additional lighting to underpasses and sidewalks and improve walkability.
"They’re pretty popular, they’re really cool, and it’s an ode to a past gone era," Beyond Walls CEO and founder Al Wilson told WBZ NewsRadio. "It lights the streetscape, you know, it’s just an extension of our work to bring art, color, and people to downtowns."
Beyond Walls is now asking the public for their input on the future of the neon lights.
"We do have a great group of people here in Lynn that want to see them stay," Wilson said. "Do you want to see it stay in Lynn? If you’re from another gateway city, would you like to see them in your city? The desire to perhaps move these up onto Union Street, we’ve got to hear that from the community."
