SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – A wildlife sanctuary makes its home in an unlikely place in Somerville.

Jerry Laurentano’s house lies behind the Green Line extension construction and just beyond McGrath Highway on Tufts Street. A small sign in front of his combination home and hair salon makes the house a certified wildlife habitat.

“I always have peanuts in my pocket,” Laurentano said, whose mother sparked a lifelong interest in him in nature. This love was accelerated when he saw a brilliant bird decades ago.

“That bird started it off. My mind starting turning,” Laurentano said. “I was just off and running.”

He added that Somerville only has three percent of open space. Laurentano was impressed to find so many birds amid a small number of houses with trees around the city.

Laurentano’s house is place of quiet and calm and he has spent decades advising Somerville on landscaping.
