BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the time to stock up on libations is now because you won't be able to on Turkey Day.

Some Bay Staters can't help but be reminded of their colonial roots whenever and wherever in the Commonwealth as blue laws prevent the sale of booze at liquor and grocery stores on Thanksgiving.

"Well, I'd like to be surprised, but I'm not surprised. I mean, it's Massachusetts," Travis of Abington stated.

According to Mass.gov, the state blue laws control which businesses can legally operate on Sundays and some legal holidays. Special rules also extend to the sale of alcoholic beverages.

"Very surprising. I think it's random that we can't. I think why Thanksgiving and not just like any other day," Kamryn of Boston said.

Over the past several years, lawmakers like State Rep. David Linsky have tried changing the laws, including this one to no avail.

"I don't know, not everyone celebrates, so I don't know why it's kind of like archaic. I don't know. We have like old liquor laws, I feel like," Johanna said.

It's also illegal in Massachusetts to buy alcohol at stores on Christmas.
