BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police in Texas said they have likely found the body of missing Brockton soldier Sgt. Elder Fernandes near Fort Hood.
Fernandes was last seen on Aug. 17 at a home in Killeen, Texas.
The Boston Globe reports Fernandes had recently transferred units after reporting he had been sexually assaulted by a superior officer.
Officials said a body was found near railroad tracks in Temple, Texas Tuesday evening. Identification found at the scene indicates the victim was Fernandes. Authorities do no suspect foul play.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fernandes family during this challenging time," Temple Police Chief Shawn Reynolds said.
Fernandes’ case is the most recent in a series of disappearances and deaths out of the Fort Hood military base—including the disappearance and death of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen.
The lawyer for Fernandes’ family, Natalie Khawam, wrote on Facebook “We will not stop until we find out what happened to Elder. We demand a Congressional Investigation of Ft. Hood. We must protect our soldiers! We demand Justice for Elder!”
