Boston Announces MA250: Road To 2026, A Plan For the US’s 250th Anniversary

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —  Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll and Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley announced MA250: Road to 2026, the second phase in the campaign to spearhead the 250th anniversary celebration of the United States' freedom.

This announcement at the Old South Meeting House in Downtown Boston started with a poem by Regie Gibson, Massachusetts’s Poet Laureate.

“For it is not in our nature to suffer in silence such things,” Gibson said.

Gov. Healey then explained that the event would take place on the Esplanade with a massive fireworks show that will be able to be watched from all over the city.

“July 4th, 2026, is going to be like something we have never ever ever seen before,” Healey said. “We are going to pack the Esplanade and up and down Storrow Drive and every bridge and every vantage point from this great city.”

She said that the state is partnering with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the event.

“It is going to be animated by the centerpiece showcase celebration televised all over that will be the Boston Pops July 4th Spectacular celebration,” Healey said. “We're entering into a partnership with providing two and a half million (dollars) to the BSO to produce this centerpiece of MA250.”

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also spoke at the event, expressing how Massachusetts was the ideal spot for the country’s 250th anniversary.

“There is no better place in the world to celebrate America's birthday then in the Cradle of Liberty,” Wu said.

Events celebrating the 250thj are also planned for the rest of 2025 and 2026. More information on all of this can be found here.
