BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Celebrations of the summer solstice this year in downtown Boston gravitate towards a new huge painted groundwork called "Gateway to Infinity," created by Maria Molteni and other Boston artists.

Molteni told WBZ's Carl Stevens that the work along the Rose Kennedy Greenway came as a commissioned piece for The Greenway Conservancy.

"It's a triple-spiral labyrinth. We're doing a summer solstice ritual on top of it, in which we are planning to call in Medusa consciousness in the place of Christopher Columbus' head, so that we can connect the heart to the mind once and for all," Molteni said.

The artist calls Gateway to Infinity a horizontal or anti-monument, something that's meant to be walked all over.

"At any moment they are the figure on the piece that is constantly changing. It's an organic, living space," Molteni said.

The public ritual will include a guided meditation, giving onlookers time for "processing, release, and regeneration throughout the work's presence on The Greenway," according to the The Greenway's website. That ritual is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
