BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Athenaeum is featuring the artwork of visitors in their new “Make Your Own Museum” gallery exhibit.
Founded in 1807, the Boston Athenaeum is one of the oldest independent libraries in the country, with thousands of books, special collections, artwork and historical artifacts.
As a “unique combination of library, museum, and cultural center,” the Athenaeum has a gallery space that “is usually filled with art, photography and all kinds of different historical collections that we have here at the Athenaeum,” said the Director of Education Michelle LeBlanc.
But since Jan. 12, the Athenaeum’s gallery has been host to a different kind of art: visitors’ own creations.

LeBlanc said the Athenaeum was in between exhibitions and they did not want the gallery to be empty. So, they decided to let the public fill the space through the “Make Your Own Museum” program. "We've invited the community to come in and make this their own vision."
LeBlanc described the newest additions to the gallery. “So what we’re seeing in here is a room, the walls are covered in paper, there’s mountains of really interesting pieces of cardboard." Both children and adults are welcome to express their artistic creativity with crayons, sharpies, cardboard and other art supplies in the middle of a real art gallery.
"Make Your Own Museum" is open through Friday, Jan. 26, to all ages.
