PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Bruins held their annual pre-season golf tournament at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth Tuesday.

Current players, former players and members of the coaching staff competed in the tournament, which raised money for the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Bruins Alumni Association.

"The golf tournament has always been the kickoff, or unofficial kickoff let's call it, for the season to start, because it is right around the corner," Boston Bruins Foundation President Bob Sweeney said.

Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney said the event, which is in its 22nd year, gives the team a chance to bond prior to the season.

"I think this is an opportunity for young guys to bridge gaps with older guys that take a lot of pride in this organization and are a big part of the history of this organization," Sweeney said.

The Bruins start their preseason against the Washington Capitals at home on Sep. 21. Their first regular season game will be on the road against Washington on Oct. 8.

It's still not clear who will serve as captain this season. Don Sweeney said leadership groups have been meeting to discuss the vacancy, but "everything's on the table."

"It comes with a lot of responsibilities, so I'd like to see a little more of an organic, natural progression of it," Sweeney said.
