BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Boston is now committed to celebrating Dominican Independence Day every year with a new tradition.

Tuesday, Feb. 27 was Dominican Independence Day and many went to the IBEW Local 103 headquarters in Dorchester for the First Annual Independence Day Breakfast. Guests enjoyed delicious Dominican cuisine while listening to local Dominican lawmakers, business owners and community leaders.

Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia was one of the speakers, hoping to inspire the next generation of Dominican residents.

“This is incredibly emotional, to be an immigrant in this country, to be Dominican and to be celebrating our independence in Local 103,” said Mejia. “I feel like we’re taking the baton and really demonstrating that Dominicans are growing here.”

Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll was also in attendance to enjoy the festivities.

“Today gives us an opportunity to really celebrate what makes being from the Dominican Republic so special: the culture, the community, the food, the commitment to family, to working hard and making the Commonwealth a better place,” said Driscoll.
