BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston City Council is considering an amendment to the "Road and Safety Accountability for Delivery Providers Ordinance," which would implement a new tax on food delivery providers.

This additional fee would affect companies like GrubHub, UberEats, and DoorDash, adding a 15-cent delivery charge per order.

The Council aims to use this amendment to address the issues surrounding drivers for third-party food delivery companies operating in Boston. Many residents have complained about unruly delivery drivers who disobey traffic rules and cause traffic congestion in neighborhoods.

While some residents support the proposal, others contend that restaurants and consumers will ultimately bear the brunt of the costs, literally and figuratively.

"People with disabilities. And I know they get delivery all the time," said one Bostonian.

The Massachusetts Restaurant Association sent a letter to the mayor's office expressing its opposition to the proposed change. The 15-cent delivery fee would help cover the enforcement costs of the ordinance, which aims to address the issues caused by delivery drivers, many of whom operate on scooters and mopeds.
