BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A proposal to rename Faneuil Hall is scheduled to be discussed Wednesday at a Boston City Council meeting.

City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson introduced the resolution which says the 18th-century merchant the marketplace is named after, Peter Faneuil, was also a slave trader, so the location should be named after someone who fought for freedom.

A couple of ideas up for consideration are Freedom Hall and Liberty Hall.

The proposal also calls for building a memorial to the trans-Atlantic slave trade at or near that public area.

Depending on the outcome of that discussion this week, the proposal could then be headed for a hearing.

WBZ's Jim MacKay (@JimMackayOnAir) reports.
