BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's the 'Snow Angels' to the rescue, if a Boston City Councilor has his way.
District 4 City Councilor Brian Worrell said he got the idea from Baltimore's Mayor Brandon Scott, where a group of volunteers in that city help senior citizens, or anyone with mobility issues, get shoveled out after a snowstorm.
Cities with this kind of program develop and maintain a list of volunteers available to help people in need by shoveling their driveways, pathways, sidewalks, even help clear the snow off their car. "We want to make sure that we have a program that can help our seniors or those who find it hard to clear 23 inches of snow," Worrell said.
More than one week after a major snowstorm dumped up to two feet of snow in some parts, arctic-like conditions have kept the ice and snow from melting.
Worrell said another related idea is to set up a pay system for the shovelers. "To get just more people helping out when we're getting hit with these massive snowstorms," he said.
The next step to get the program going is to set up a hearing on the proposal.
In the meantime, Worrell said it's all about helping out our neighbors. "When you help that neighbor, you're helping out everyone on that street."
