BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —  The Boston College community is mourning the loss of NHL and former Boston College Eagles player Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew, 29, who were killed while riding bicycles in New Jersey Thursday night.

Police said it happened just before 8:30 p.m. in Oldman’s Township, N.J.

In a statement, Boston College spokesperson Jack Dunn said that the community was “stunned” by the news.

“Johnny Gaudreau was not only one of the greatest players in the history of Boston College hockey, but one of the nicest as well. Matthew was a gifted player and equally beloved by his teammates. Our prayers are with Johnny, Matthew, and the entire Gaudreau family at this time of unimaginable loss,” Dunn said.

During his playing career at BC, Gaudreau was a star player and earned the nickname “Johnny Hockey.”

Gaudreau helped the Eagles win a national title in 2012 as a freshman and won two consecutive Hockey East Player of the Year awards.

Gaudreau continued with the NHL, playing for the Calgary Flames from 2014-2022, and the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2022-2024.

The brothers were supposed to serve as groomsmen on Friday afternoon at their sister’s wedding in New Jersey.

The driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was charged with two counts of death by auto.
