BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu declared a heat emergency from Monday, July 15 through Wednesday, July 17 because of another round of extreme heat arriving in the city this week.
Temperatures in Boston are expected to be in the high 90s until Wednesday with Accuweather RealFeels in or close to the 100s. The threshold for a heat emergency in the City of Boston is two days with a heat index over 95 degrees.
“As we face another round of hot weather in Boston, our city teams are working to ensure all residents, especially children and seniors, have the resources to stay cool,” Mayor Wu said in a statement. “We’re encouraging families to take advantage of the pools and splash pads that are open, take breaks inside, and to stay hydrated and check on each other.”
The city is taking several measures to help residents keep cool during the heat wave.
Cooling centers will be open in the lobbies and common areas at 14 Boston Centers for Youth and Families community centers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular summer programming will continue at all BCYF locations. The Wang YMCA in Chinatown, Veronica Smith Senior Center in Brighton, and the East Boston Senior Center will also be open as cooling centers.

Officials set up misting tents at several locations around the city, including ones at Boston Housing Authority sites and on City Hall Plaza. All Boston Public Library locations will also be open for residents to cool down.
The mayor said the city's Emergency Medical Services normally see a 10 to 15 percent increase in 9-1-1 calls during heat waves. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities to the morning and evening time, and check in on friends and family to make sure they're safe.
The Boston Public Health Commission also has emergency shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness that are open 24 hours a day and seven days a week—a men's shelter is open at 112 Southampton Street and a women's shelter is open at 794 Massachusetts Avenue.
