BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After a devastating New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people, public safety measures are a top priority for Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy.

From events such as the Boston Marathon, and championship parades, Boston hosts several events each year that generate large crowds.

“The marathon is one of the biggest gatherings across the country, and obviously when we win championships,” Murphy said.

In years past, the city of Boston has implemented a number of security measures for large events, especially following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. For the Boston Marathon, those measures have included the installation of cameras along the marathon route and the presence of both uniformed and undercover police officers.

But, Murphy said that while the city does have public safety plans in place, they are not always consistent.

“Someone reached out from our municipal police here in the building and said that when they had events for First Night down on City Hall Plaza, they had placed cars, but it’s not something that happens all the time, it’s not written into [city] expectations.”

Murphy also said that trash trucks and plows are an effective method to deter and prevent threats, like someone using a vehicle as a weapon.

“Proactively implementing enhanced safety measures informed by intelligence and expertise, can strengthen the city’s preparedness for large scale events and improve public safety outcomes,” Murphy added.

The Boston City Council passed a hearing order, which will bring together all departments who can play a role in public safety.
