BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The World Cup match between the United States and the Netherlands made for a Saturday morning wake up for Boston sports fans— and ended with a rude awakening as the Americans walked away with a 3-1 loss, eliminating the team from the running.
Fans were packed in bars across the city on game day, including on Lansdowne Street near Fenway Park. WBZ's James Rojas was there to garner the reaction from fans that were disappointed, yet hopeful for the future team's outlook.
There was a brief surge of excitement inside the Cask 'N Flagon after the U.S. put themselves on the board, but that was quickly overshadowed by the Netherlands third and final goal.
"It was good to get to round 16, we got a bunch of good, young guys, hopefully we can go from there and do well when we get to host [the World Cup] here in 2026," said one fan.
"Gutted that we lost— it's a disappointing result, but there's always four more years, it's a young team. They had a decent World Cup and had some good results, even today we gave them a good game, so there's a lot to look forward to," another said.

One fan couldn't see the glass half full in the moment.
"Misery. Sadness. Devastation," one fan said when asked how they felt over the U.S. loss.
Though not everyone was so disappointed with the final score.
"Yeah, I'm from the Netherlands, it's amazing I'm so glad we're going through— I thought we would but being here it's great. My whole lab is from the U.S., so it was kind of like me against them, but it's just friendly. If the U.S. won, I would still be happy because I'm here, it's all for fun," one Dutch fan said.
Argentina and Australia are also set to play on Saturday against each other in round 16.
