BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — First Night celebrations were underway on Sunday morning at City Hall Plaza in Boston.
There were events all through the city, as residents prepare to start 2024. TK Skenderian with Conventures was one of the organizers leading the festivities.
“More than 13 hours of live music and dancing and programming going on at our main stage here in City Hall Plaza, with Boston-based rapper Sammy Adams helping us count down,” said Skenderian.
A New Year’s staple in Boston has always been the elaborate ice sculptures, spread out across downtown. This year’s sculptors were happy to have better conditions on New Year’s Eve than the days prior.
“We’re happy that it’s cold. Yesterday, it was terrible, it was raining,” said ice sculptor Nick Rose.
“Any casual cotton glove does the trick,” said another ice sculptor.
Rose and his team used more than 20 thousand pounds of ice to create several sculptures. They chose to keep the designs local, focusing on famous Boston landmarks.
“It’s all Boston themed. We’ve got a lobster, we’ve got the Citgo sign and then we’ve got a nice swan over there,” said Rose.
The ice sculptures will be on display until 12:30 A.M. on Jan. 1.
