BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A prescription drug being dubbed as the ‘Ozempic for alcohol’ is helping subdue people’s drinking habits as it rises in popularity.
Naltrexone is a non-addictive prescription drug that is used to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).
The prescription works by blocking pleasure sensors in the brain making the effects of alcohol less enjoyable and is taken daily in its pill form or every four weeks when administered through an injection.
This comes as an opportunity for some folks to help cut down on their drinking even as reports indicate that Gen Z is drinking less when compared to other generations.
Some in Boston offered their own explanations as to why Gen z might not need it all.
“They’re just not really as interested, maybe,” suggested one.
“I also think people just want to live a healthy lifestyle in general and might not be drinking as much,” said one woman.
Others mentioned the legal cannabis market, which is also giving Gen Z an alternative to adult beverages.
“I think a lot of people my age have turned to that (marijuana products) instead of drinking,” said one woman.
“A 6-pack for example is like $15,” said Northeastern student Mike. “When you could get the same price for a marijuana e-cigarette,” he added.
