BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The celebration is already going strong in anticipation of the Boston Celtics opening their 2024-2025 season against the New York Knicks Tuesday night.

It's also the raising of the team's 18th NBA championship banner.

To mark the occasion, a Celtics party was held at the Dunkin' on Canal Street across the street from the TD Garden

Team mascot Lucky the Leprechaun made an appearance and showed off his basketball skills while serving coffee and giving away Celtics merch.

In between dribbles and spinning a basketball, Lucky was giving away tickets to tonight's game to some lucky customers. "Awesome, I didn't expect to see Lucky here!" said one customer. "He paid for my drink and everything. I'm so excited!"

As for Lucky, he said he missed the last time the Celtics won the championship in 2008, so he's making sure he enjoys all of this celebration. "Literally I've been waiting my whole career for today. I couldn't be more excited," he said.

A Celtics Rally is being held at City Hall Plaza later in the day.

Governor Maura Healey issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 22, 2024 'Celtics Banner 18 Day' in Massachusetts.
