BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Harbor Now hosted the first outdoor clean-up of the season Saturday as volunteers collect trash around Moakley Park.

Boston Harbor Now is a non-profit that works with public agencies to preserve the local waterfront community, including Moakley Park which is one of Boston’s largest waterfront parks.

The organizations have been hosting monthly cleanups at Moakley Park since 2020.

“We do everything from natural debris cleanup to collecting recyclables and trash,” Jaye Meakem, community engagement manger, told WBZ NewsRadio.

The cleanups are not just about tidying the community space but also to bring people together, and it’s only been growing.

The organization said hundreds of volunteers dedicated nearly 535 service hours last fall and removed over 1,200 pounds of trash and natural debris.

Meakem added that this year, the organization started tracking the different types of trash collected at the cleanups to figure out what’s being littered and to create a solution.

“I think that most people do not decide that they want to litter in a public space,” they said. “You’re not trying to be a jerk,”
