RANDOLPH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Higashi School’s jazz band showed off pride and talent performing at Teamsters Local 25’s 16th Annual Autism Gala Saturday.
Executive Director of the school Mike Kelly, told WBZ NewsRadio that this is a great opportunity for both the school and students.
“It gives us a lot of pride that my students are up there,” Kelly said. “It’s amazing what they do and really builds that confidence and self-esteem.”
Boston Higashi School is an international residential program serving children and young adults on the autism spectrum by teaching them social independence, dignity, and how to contribute to society.
Teamsters Local 25’s Autism Gala launched in 2006 and is the largest fundraiser dedicated to supporting research and organizations in the New England region. The group supports nearly 100 organizations, including the Boston Higashi School.
“They’ve been a great supporter of ours, and it’s really helped us enhance some of our programming,” Kelly said, adding that the fund has helped them create more safe facilities and even build an athletic field.
The program raised nearly $7 million dollars towards the cause.
