BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a heat emergency for the city through Wednesday, with temperatures expected in the 90s.
The humidity will increase throughout the week, according to the AccuWeather forecast, making it feel even hotter. The heat index is expected to reach 95 degrees on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Wu is encouraging residents to take advantage of the city’s splash pads and public pools this week. All Boston Centers for Youth & Families Cooling Centers, plus additional centers, will also be available through Wednesday during their normal operating hours for residents to cool off.
Boston Public Library locations are also available for residents to get away from the heat.
To avoid heat illness, the city says to stay hydrated, keep cool with air conditioners and fans, take breaks when outside, wear loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen. The city also says pets and children should never be left alone inside cars, even for short periods of time.
Boston is expected to cool down a bit later in the week, with highs in the 80s on Thursday and Friday, according to AccuWeather.
