BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu held a press conference on Monday regarding public safety during the First Night New Year’s Eve celebrations on Tuesday, honing in on issues that tend to crop up at events like this.

Mayor Wu reminded everyone about the legality of personal fireworks use.

“We want to remind everyone celebrating first night with us that using, selling, or having fireworks is both illegal and dangerous,” Mayor Wu said.

MBTA Police Chief Kenneth Green focused on substance and alcohol consumption, encouraging riders to not overdo it.

“Consumption of alcohol and/or unruly behavior will not be tolerated on the MBTA,” Green said.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox talked about how personal drone use will not be allowed during the event.

“We also ask you not to bring drones and/or use drones in the area; that is not allowed,” the commissioner said. “It’s more of an issue now because it seems like more people have them and they’re using them inappropriately, so now we need to remind folks.”

Boston EMS Chief James Hooley gave some health and safety advice to ensure people stay safe during the festivities, especially regarding the cold and wet weather.

“When it’s wet and it’s cold, people can really succumb to hypothermia or the effects of it, Hooley said.

His overall message was to look after your friends to the best of your ability.

“Be a good wingman, wingwoman, whatever it is, don’t let your buddy go off on their own,” Hooley said. “A lot of that will just avoid a lot of unnecessary trips to a hospital.”
