BOSTON (WBZ News Radio) – Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was sworn in for her second term Monday morning. The inauguration held at Boston Symphony Hall included the swearing in of Wu as well as the City Council.
After the election results were certified, Wu placed her hand on a bible held by her children as she swore to support the constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Soon after, the Boston City Council had their opportunity to declare their allegiance to the Commonwealth.
Mayor Wu took to the podium to deafening applause. She thanked her family and the voters for giving her a second term.
“To the people of Boston. Thank you for the honor of continuing our work together,” said Wu. “Thank you for believing that a better world is possible.”
When it comes to what she is proud of in her first term as mayor, Wu talked about her administration’s success in lessening gun violence in the city, expanding city wide Pre-K, and made bus routes fare-free in the city.
For the next four years, she has plans to improve Boston Public Schools, protect the City’s higher education institutions, and streamline constituent permitting processes.
“In our second term we will reinforce the very foundations of our democracy," she said.
Wu addressed how the federal government is impacting everything that is done at the city level from funding to immigration policies. She decried the Trump administration's actions that she says have negatively impacted the City of Boston.
“We are Boston. We will not appease or abet any threat to our city. And we will not wait for permission to build the world we deserve.”
She finished her address by talking about housing, saying that Bostonians must be able to grow up and grow old in the city. She wants to continue efforts to build affordable housing to accommodate everyone who wants to live in the city.
Mayor Wu will continue to celebrate her second term by holding events around the city all week long. You can find a detailed list here.
