BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is facing criticism for her comments in the wake of a fatal shooting in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.

Boston Police said an off-duty police officer shot a man wielding a knife inside the Chick-fil-A on Boylston Street on Saturday. The man, later identified by authorities as 32-year-old Lmark Jaramillo of Roslindale, allegedly chased two people into the restaurant. Police said he did not comply when the officer identified himself and told him to drop the knife.

After getting shot, Jaramillo was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The officer has not been identified as the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office continues its investigation.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has come under fire for her comments after the shooting.

“My condolences and all of our thoughts are with the family of the individual whose life has been lost,” said Mayor Wu at the press conference on Saturday.

This comes ahead of Mayor Wu’s testimony on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, where she will appear alongside mayors of New York City, Chicago, and Denver to talk about immigration policies.

Republicans have been critical of Boston’s “sanctuary city” status. In the wake of the press conference, they slammed Mayor Wu for her apparent focus on the shooting victim’s family instead of praising the off-duty officer's actions.

Although the Democrat has not officially announced her bid for re-election, she is expected to run for Mayor of Boston again this year.
