LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Even though the teams don't have names yet, the new professional women's hockey league has started its inaugural season.
There are six teams in the league including Boston which opens its season Wednesday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell against Minnesota.
The PWHL's season opened Monday night in Toronto with New York beating Toronto 4-0.
Ella Shelton made history scoring the league's very first goal in the 1st period.
The league's six teams are New York, Toronto, Boston, Minnesota, Ottawa and Montreal. Boston's General Manager Danielle Marmer said the league is making history. "This is the very first time the best women's hockey players in the world are playing in one league," she said. "There are fans who want women's hockey here in Boston, and we're hoping they can rally around us like the did the previous team."
She's referring to the Boston Pride, the now dissolved team from where several of the current team members came from.
