BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The time of year has arrived when many young adults run amuck with their friends, throwing caution to the wind, basking in all that life has to offer. But the Boston Police Department said it's also a time for caution, and are spreading the word about dangerous activities that could occur between spring break, which kicks off as many get ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
The department issued a letter urging students to be aware of drink-spiking as they celebrate during the break.
"Colorless, odorless, and tasteless drugs like Rohypnol ('roofies'), GHB, and Ketamine can be secretly placed in beverages, leading to disorientation, confusion, temporary paralysis, unconsciousness, and other serious effects that leave victims vulnerable," BPD said in a statement.
Students like Miranda from Emerson seemed to be grateful for the warning. She states that occasionally, someone buys her a drink while she's out, and hearing about the issue is scary.
Authorities encourage people like Miranda to always have their drinks served directly by a bartender and keep them in sight.
"If you need to leave your table, take your drink with you — even to the restroom," police said.
Police also encouraged people to seek immediate help if they suddenly felt dizzy, nauseous, light-headed, or otherwise unwell.
