BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A pair of special guests helped The Salvation Army raise money in West Roxbury Friday.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox and Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke rang the bells and greeted shoppers outside the Roche Bros. Supermarket on Centre Street.

"The Salvation Army does a lot for the fire department," Burke said. "People displaced from fire, The Salvation Army helps, so they always have our back when something tragic happens."

Burke told WBZ NewsRadio he was more than happy to help the organization with its Red Kettle Campaign.

"It’s a great thing to work for them for Christmas and raise some money for their cause," said Burke. "They help people pay the rent, they get toys for the children at Christmastime. They do a lot of great things, so I’m proud to be here."

Cox was also grateful for all The Salvation Army does.

"They help so many families, whether it’s the elderly or people in need," Cox said. "Anything that I can do to give back, it’s really fun to be out here. It’s a beautiful day for it. A little cold."

Salvation Army Captain Shakai Drigo was also outside the market. He told WBZ NewsRadio it is more important than ever to keep that kettle warm.

"Right now, [we're] 25 percent down with donations," Drigo said. "The need is all the way up, always up."
