BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officers from the Boston Police Department increased officer patrols around the Boston Common in response to growing public safety concerns.
The redeployment effort comes in reaction to prolonged open drug use and violence spotted around Tremont and Winter Streets.
Ermeena recently moved to Boston, and while she hasn’t had any bad experiences in the area, she supports more officer visibility.
“If their presence can make people feel safer— feel like nothing’s going to happen to them I think it’s fine,” she said.
Meanwhile Rachel, an Emerson College student, disagrees and is not sure more uniforms are necessarily the answer.

“It’s not that I don’t love having more officers on foot patrol, it’s that they don’t actually make us feel safer, they just tend to arrest students,” she said.
“It’s kind of disheartening because I know what more police means, and that just means that more students are going to get arrested and victimized,” Rachel added.
Boston Police said they will add foot patrols and prioritize areas that have seen an uptick in 911 and 311 calls.
