BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cambridge Street near Mass General Hospital was shut down Tuesday while Boston Police investigated a shooting.

Officers responded to the area at around 9 a.m. and found one person injured.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the suspect approached an officer in the area and knocked the officer’s hat off at one point.

“[The suspect] appeared to be suffering from some type of mental health issue, who somehow attacked the officer in some way shape or form, was able to get a hold of officer’s firearm, discharge at least one round injuring himself," he said.

Cox added that bystanders and witnesses also helped subdue the suspect, who was taken into custody.

“We want to say thank you to those people who came to the assistance of the officer in general,” Cox said. “We are very thankful that no one was seriously injured and that the officer is doing OK."

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries for shooting himself in the foot.

The incident remains under investigation. The identity of the suspect has not released.
