BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston has been ranked by USA Today as one of the most walkable cities in the country, and locals and tourists alike seem to agree.
The city came in at No. 5 on the list, right before Columbus, Ohio. The publication calls Boston a “walking city that’s fun to explore on foot,” and highlights Beacon Hill as one of the most walkable neighborhoods, along with the North End and Back Bay.
Tenzin, a tourist visiting from Idaho, said that assessment “totally checks out.”
“We took two Lyft's the entire trip, and other than that we walked literally everywhere in the entire city,” he said.
Ulan, also from Idaho, said she and Tenzin have been all up and down the East Coast, and Boston comes on top for walkability.
“We’ve been to a whole bunch of cities on the East Coast, and [Boston] was pretty easy to walk around it and navigate,” she said. “All the historical sites that we wanted to see were really close together and really easy to find where we were going.”
Locals say they agree.
“It’s really pretty good, the sidewalks are pretty wide,” said Hultan Sultan, a local resident.
Jennifer, a local resident, said she agrees with the ranking for only some parts of the city.
In downtown Boston that seems very true, I think out where it’s toward the suburbs in the neighborhoods is probably a little bit less walkable … you need a car to get everywhere”
Other New England cities on the list were Providence, Rhode Island at No. 2 and Burlington, Vermont at No. 3.
