BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Among U.S. cities, L.A. now reigns supreme in the matter of rodent infestations, while Boston has dropped one rung in the ladder of the most infested cities.

"There's more rats than people on the street at night, and mice and all that," one local said.

Orkin, a pest control services company, recently released its annual "Top 50 Rattiest Cities List" and the Bay State ranks 13th in the nation.

New numbers show Boston ranked better than last year in rodent infestation, down from 12th worst in the U.S. to 13th among cities. According to the report, the change in rankings signals a shift in rat activity in cities likely influenced by human behavior, weather and infrastructure.

"Everybody got to be on the same page. Everybody got to take care of their own property to get rid of rats," another local said.

Experts say residents can help with the problem by implementing the GNAW strategy. Guard entry points by sealing cracks, holes and gaps. Never leave food unattended outside for pets or wildlife. Avoid clutter that could create nesting spots. Watch for signs like droppings, gnaw marks or rub marks, burrows or scampering noises.

"It's better than some cities. I just came back from New York and they were worse," one resident stated.

New York City continues to hold the 3rd spot on the list.
