BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some fast-food joints may have a traffic problem on Thursday.
National Drive-Thru Day is a chance to thank those workers who make dining out as easy as possible. Many fast-food chains recognize the holiday and have been dishing out special deals to celebrate.
Some are taking in the deals in Boston, while others reminisce about a time before the grab-and-go window.
“I grew up… in a time that we didn’t have these types of food concessions all over the city, we just ate at home,” said one Boston customer.
While some may think McDonald’s was the drive-thru grandfather, the golden arches didn’t open one until 1975.
Red’s Giant Hamburg in Missouri was the first to open a drive-thru window in 1947. Since then, the idea has grown significantly.
That growth was due in part to military members being unable to enter fast-food establishments with their uniforms on, and therefore were given the quick alternative option.
