BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Starting in April, the Boston Housing Authority will consider $91,000 as a qualifying salary for low-income housing.

It's another indication of just how expensive it's become to live in Boston and surrounding areas.

According to a study released over the summer, Massachusetts has the second-highest cost of living in the country.

Forbes Advisor reported the only other state more expensive to live in is Hawaii.

The study analyzed the cost of everyday expenses including housing, healthcare, food, and transportation.

Ray is from Dorchester and said while he doesn't make $91,000 a year, he understands how the qualifying salary for low-income housing in Boston continues to rise.

"I would say it's kind of accurate,” Ray said. “I'm about $20,000 off from that."

Ray added he is always trying to make more money. “I’m comfortable, but not as comfortable as I want to be,” he said.

Isaac moved from Rhode Island to Boston for a better job but is still frustrated trying to make ends meet.

"A $100,000, I mean, you can live comfortably, but you just need more all the time."

Meanwhile, there's a waiting list for people hoping to get low-income housing in Boston.
