BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Public Schools are closed on Tuesday for extreme cold, officials said. It's the second closure for weather reasons in the last three school days, after a snow day on Friday.

"Tomorrow will be a closure because of weather and frigid temperatures," Mayor Wu said at a press conference on Monday.

The schools district have been dealing with a staff shortage in recent days in part due to COVID, with more than 1,200 staffers out for various reasons as of Monday. Wu called school closures a last resort.

"We do know that COVID positivity has been very much impacting our workforce and our educators and school staff. We'll continue to monitor the situation school by school, but at this point, don't anticipate district-wide closure," she said.

Temperatures are expected to be some of the coldest of the year, with a forecast high of only 11 degrees according to Accuweather.
