BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new soccer field and recreation complex opened Tuesday on the former Dom Savio Preparatory High School campus in East Boston.
Youth programs will start using the field later this summer.
"I think it's just such an opportunity for kids of different walks, of different lives to come together and play something that they love so much," Rebeca Villatoro-Alvarez with nonprofit Boston Scores said.
Boston Scores spearheaded construction on the complex which also includes a playground and garden space.
The project was part of the group's $17.5 million campaign to breath fresh life into Boston's youth soccer scene.
Other projects include renovations to office space shared by Boston Scores and the Salesian Boys and Girls Club.
Several local groups have pitched in to fund the campaign, including the New Balance Foundation which has made a $1 million donation.
